James Clerk Maxwell Monument (Alexander Stoddart)
George Street Edinburgh
Granite was Alexander Stoddart’s choice for the pedestal onto which his seated figure of the famous physicist would be mounted. Designed to harmonise with the symmetry of the New Town it faces west along George Street.
The sculptors design proposal for the pedestal was developed and redrafted by Stoneworks and fabrication drawings prepared. Sandblasted and profiled silver grey granite is constructed around a precast concrete core manufactured and laid in sections.
Bronze casting by Black Isle Bronze. Granite supply and profiling by Fyfe Glenrock. Project management and Plinth construction by Stoneworks. Bronze installation jointly by Black Isle Bronze and Stoneworks. Unveiled in 2008.
